When you get a toothache, generally it is caused by some sort of decay going on in a tooth. It could be a simple cavity, an exposed root, or possibly a filling that has become loose. Whatever the reason is, you are in discomfort and want relief fast. While we always open our schedule to patients that are in discomfort, there may be occasions when you’re unable to get into our office as soon as you’d like. In these rare times, we encourage you to try these common home remedies for relief.

Peppermint Oil and Teas – Did you know that peppermint has a natural numbing effect. The holistic healthcare industry is rife with peppermint products these days because of its popular benefits. Just drink a little tea, or drop a dab of oil on the problem area.

Saltwater Gargle – The classic cure for a boatload of oral injuries, saltwater has been a world-renowned antiseptic and anti-inflammatory for thousands of years.

Cold Compress – Swelling and inflammation from an injury can be relieved when a toothache is present by pressing a freezer bag of peas, or a frozen steak against your cheek. Blue bricks and gels work too. It works by constricting blood vessels in the afflicted area.

Oral and Topical Meds – Over-the-counter pain-relievers are always available at your local pharmacy, and topical numbing agent benzocaine can be used. Ask the pharmacist about which one is best for your situation.

Mouthwash – When it is an infection that is causing the discomfort, an antibacterial mouthwash can help by ridding the mouth of germs. Don’t neglect to check the label because not all of them contain antibacterial medicine.
