The American Dental Association offers a series of recommendations to help prevent cavities, problems with periodontal health and maintain a healthy mouth. This starts with a consistent daily oral hygiene routine founded on brushing twice each day and flossing at least once.

This is designed to effectively food particles and plaque from your mouth before they can harden into the bacterial substance known as tartar. This will significantly reduce your chances of suffering from cavities and periodontal health problems.

When brushing your teeth you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste formulated with mild abrasive and added fluoride. This will help remove plaque and food residue from the faces of your teeth while maintaining the strength of your tooth enamel.

Be sure to focus on brushing one tooth at a time in a small circular motion. The entire brushing portion of your oral hygiene routine should take approximately two to three minutes.

The American Dental Association also recommends flossing once each day. Be sure to floss between each of your teeth, as well as behind your last molars, and along the gumline. Waxed dental floss might also help you more easily work the floss into hard to reach places. The special coating makes it easier to slip the strand of floss into tight spaces without snapping it into your gums.
